Jembi Participates In Artificial Intelligence Workshop In Cape Town

Jembi and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research Collaborating on eHealth Representation

Cape Town, 29 April 2013 - Jembi Board member, Dr Deshen Moodley, and Executive Director, Prof Chris Seebregts, participated in an artificial intelligence workshop in Cape Town from 24-25 April 2013. The workshop was organized as part of ongoing collaboration  between Jembi and the UKZN/Meraka Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR) and  Health Architecture Laboratory (HeAL). Jembi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding  with CAIR and is collaborating in the development of several research projects, including eHealth representation and modeling and joint supervision of post-graduate research projects involving machine learning and decision support systems1.

CAIR Director, Prof Tommie Meyer, explained the aim of the meeting: “Formal
representation of eHealth concepts is an important pre-requisite to current health  information system challenges, such as interoperability and standardization.

In 2012, South Africa released an eHealth strategy2 that identifies interoperability and standards adoption as priority areas for eHealth development. Achieving these goals will require advanced representational techniques in order to optimize knowledge management in the system.”

The workshop also included two visitors. Prof Randy Goebel is a visiting Canadian academic who also directs the Alberta Innovates Centre for Machine Learning in Edmonton. Prof Goebel is providing inputs into some of the innovation models emerging from the UKZN/CAIR/HeAL-Jembi collaboration. Dr Szymon Klaarman, is a joint post-doctoral fellow between the University of Edinburgh and CAIR/UKZN  who is working on a collaborative project with CAIR/HeAL and Jembi on formal representation of business process modeling.
