The Open Source Electronic Health Record Alliance (OSEHRA) has just released the prelimintary agenda to its 2015 Open Source Summit: Community-Powered Healthcare IT Solutions, to occur July 29-31 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. “In its fourth year, we are delighted that our annual Summit has grown exponentially in both size and significance,” said Dr. Seong Ki Mun, President of OSEHRA. “With an impressive technical program, respected plenary speakers, and unfettered access to open source leaders, the 2015 Summit is certain to draw a diverse and enthusiastic community of participants.

Nearly 400 industry leaders, federal and state government officials, academics, clinicians, developers, and researchers participated in the 2014 Summit—with representation from the United States, Canada, India, Jordan, Mexico, Romania, South Korea, and the United Kingdom. 2015 Summit attendees will gain expertise in public and private sector open source health IT, will access domestic and international market opportunities, and will collaborate on global state- of-the-art solutions for electronic health records, personal health records, and population health tool development. This year, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan will describe its rollout of VistA, an initiative through which Jordan has embraced an open source strategy to deploy a robust and cost-effective national EHR. More details on last year's conference can be found in this article.

The OSEHRA community is expanding beyond its VistA-centric origins. As detailed in this announcement, "this year, in collaboration with Open Health News, a diverse panel of open source community leaders has been formed to exchange ideas, expertise, and business opportunities."  For the first time, the Summit will also welcome "the population health analytics community with an expansive program of presentations, roundtables, and workshop style meetings, including a dedicated analytics track."

Further, due to popular demand, OSEHRA and the VISTA Expertise Network will again partner to host a special Technical Town Hall; this will focus on the future of the Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VistA), the electronic health record system utilized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and other healthcare providers worldwide. Also, in coordination with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) leadership, a session featuring the latest innovations from within VA will occur on the final day.

In addition, a number of roundtables and in-depth discussions will address key topics within VistA Evolution, including a “deep dive” on the Enterprise Health Management Platform (eHMP) software development kit.

Finally, a number of OSEHRA Community workgroups will report progress in activities such as:

  • Best practices in intellectual property management and open source licensing;
  • The forthcoming release of OSEHRA VistA 1.0 and the associated OSEHRA FORUM patch management system, a result of collaborative development efforts by the Code Convergence Work Group and supporting OSEHRA activities;
  • Successful completion by the Immunization Work Group of VIMM 1.0, which accommodated code convergence with the Indian Health Service, and the incorporation of open source clinical decision support tools in support of the VIMM 2.0 project; and
  • Completion of collaborative effort by the popHealth® Open Source Project Group to converge forked versions of popHealth software in support of State-level use cases.
