Document Storage Systems, Inc. Announces Release of New vxVistA Open Source Version

Press Release | PR NewsWire | November 12, 2013

Software development and systems integration company, Document Storage Systems, Inc. (DSS, Inc.), today announced the release of the latest vxVistA Open Source version 2013.0.

vxVistA 2013.0 will be released to the entire VistA Community via The Extensions Hub. The latest version continues to modernize the VistA legacy system for hospitals, clinics, physician practices and community health organizations.

vxVistA is a scalable, customizable EHR, capable of integrating with additional Open Source and Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) extensions, to expand its capabilities to healthcare specialties like Behavioral Health, Dental, Ophthalmology and Oncology.

vxVistA 2013.0 contains significant enhancements to address immunization documentation, women's health including OB/GYN and pediatrics, pharmacy orders, notifications, billing and reporting codes and improved viewing of Continuity of Care Documents and Continuity of Care Records to ultimately enhance patient care.

"We've worked to continue enhancing the vxVistA Open Source EHR for many years and are excited to announce the availability of new extensions and enhancements in vxVistA 2013.0," said Mark Byers, president and CEO of DSS. "We are confident that the continued innovation of VistA will foster the adoption of this powerful and flexible EHR system."

In addition to releasing vxVistA 2013.0, DSS released the vxPatient Picture and vxPatient Search Tool Extension to the Open Source Electronic Health Record Agent (OSEHRA) via the Apache 2.0 Open Source license to further enhance the vxVistA EHR.

The Patient Picture tool assists providers in meeting National Patient Safety Goal to correctly identify patients by capturing a patient's picture and attaching it to their patient file for easy identification validations and verification; The Patient Search Tool enables clinicians and researchers who use the VistA EHR to quickly search a patient's entire electronic record for free text data that might otherwise be scattered throughout the chart.

"Through these open source VistA extensions available to the community, DSS aims to improve patient care and accelerate VistA EHR innovation. We hope the donation of the DSS vxPatient Picture Tool, vxPatient Search Tool and vxVistA 2013.0 as an Open Source license will further this innovation, and promote the importance of government and private company collaboration," said Mark Byers, CEO and President of DSS, Inc.

The release of vxVistA 2013.0 and Open Source VistA Extensions is expected to improve direct patient care, safety, and quality. Providers will have new patient identification and search functionality that will help meet National Patient Safety Goals and improve patient care.

DSS developed vxVistA based on the VA's award-winning VistA system, which is proven to reduce costs and enhance the quality of patient care. To learn more about vxVistA, visit www.dssinc.com or www.ThevxHub.org.
