600-bed NHS Hospital in England Goes Live with Open Source Electronic Record for Patients
Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has become the first NHS hospital in the UK to go live with an open source electronic patient record (EPR), a landmark move expected to help staff deliver better patient care through improved access to information.The trust has successfully rolled out the system in A&E, theatres, outpatients and the hospital’s 30 wards with the support of IMS MAXIMS, after the software firm released the code for its open source EPR technology to the NHS just over a year ago. Up until now NHS trusts have depended on proprietary software in order to record and manage patient information.

Defining An Open Platform for Health IT
It is widely agreed that the future of digital health lies in an “Open Platform”. However, it’s not clear as to exactly what an Open Platform is or how we get there. This blog aims to answer the first question and to provide some guidance on the second. While any given instance of an Open Platform will be a specific implementation of a set of software components owned and operated by a particular organisation (this might be a health and social care organisation or a third party, operating the platform on behalf of a local health and care community), it is most usefully defined by a set of principles rather than the specific details of a particular implementation.

New open source tools available for openEHR archetype development
As part of an effort to expand the global openEHR community, Marand has decided to open source ADL Designer, a web -based archetype development tool. The tool allows visual authoring of ADL 2 archetypes and templates including full archetype parsing, validation, flattening and serialisation. Backward compatibility for existing ADL 1.4 archetypes and export to Operational Template (1.4 OPT) is also supported. Previously, Marand had also open sourced ADL2 core libraries to provide a java based reference implementation of the Archetype Definition Language ADL 2.0 and AOM specifications.

NHS finances are under intense pressure and demand for services is rising. Something has to give and business as usual is not an option. NHS England recognised this when it supported the establishment of Code4Health, an initiative that stimulates and supports IT innovation in healthcare. Protecode Announces Joint Open Source Software Competition with NHS
Protecode, an innovative provider of open source license management systems, today announced a collaboration with the British National Health Service (NHS) and Source Code Control Limited to launch the Code4Health competition, aimed at identifying quality software projects within the NHS's Code4Health Custodian model. The competition on managing compliance and vulnerabilities in open source software (OSS) is intended to highlight governance and security weaknesses that should be avoided by Code4Health collaborators as they develop and contribute their software to the community.

UK Health Service Nurtures Open Source Communities
The United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) is nurturing a growing number of communities of software developers working on open source solutions. NHS’ Code4Health team is now supporting 17 communities that bring together health care providers, developers and supporters. Examples include Open Odonto, open source software for dentistry, and openMAXIMS, guiding the development of an open source electronic patient record system for the NHS. A third community working with Code4health is openEobs, a project that helps clinicians and managers ensure safer patients, safer wards and safer hospitals.

University Of Bradford To Be Hub For Digital Healthcare
The University of Bradford will become a hub for the development of healthcare apps and other digital healthcare solutions after becoming the first UK higher education institution to be awarded NHS England Code4Health Community status: Code4Health University of Bradford <https://code-4-health.org/communities>. The award recognises the University’s central role in creating a community of academics, clinicians, developers, suppliers and patients that will collaborate to develop and test innovative health-related technologies with the aim of these making their way into the healthcare market.

Code4Health and Interoperability, In partnership with NHS England
Building on the success of Code4Health* , NHS England is launching the Code4Health Interoperability Community with a specific remit of co-creating a common and open set of APIs to support information sharing across health and care. Governed by a community nominated project board, made up of representatives from the supplier community, local providers as well as reps from ‘the Centre’, together the group will develop and host of a prioritised catalogue of APIs for use across health and social care.
