Artificial Intelligence Is Not as Smart as You (or Elon Musk) Think
In March 2016, DeepMind’s AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol, who at the time was the best human Go player in the world. It represented one of those defining technological moments like IBM’s Deep Blue beating chess champion Garry Kasparov, or even IBM Watson beating the world’s greatest Jeopardy! champions in 2011. Yet these victories, as mind-blowing as they seemed to be, were more about training algorithms and using brute-force computational strength than any real intelligence...

Blockchain’s Weak Spots Pose a Hidden Danger to Users
Technologists, entrepreneurs, and some big companies are busy dreaming up new ways of using the core of Bitcoin—a distributed cryptographic ledger, or blockchain—to reinvent everything from business contracts and health records to carbon credits and new trading platforms (see “Why Bitcoin Could Be Much More Than a Currency”). However, one expert warns that they may be building their dreams on top of a precarious foundation. Emin Gün Sirer, an associate professor at Cornell University, has been researching ways in which Bitcoin and blockchains can fail...

Cornell Freshman Uses Big Data and Predictive Models to Improve Cancer Diagnoses
Abu Qader ’21 is just settling into his room at Mary Donlon Hall. Like any new Cornell freshman, he’s been spending lots of time joining clubs and hanging out with new friends on his floor. But unlike lots of freshmen, Qader is also running a company, GliaLab, which is developing software that can improve the accuracy of breast cancer diagnoses, especially in developing countries. He’s been featured by both Google and TedX Teen, talking about his work and his passion for combining computer science and health care...

Open-Source Software Unlocks 3-D View of Nanomaterials
Now it’s possible for anyone to see and share 3-D nanoscale imagery with Tomviz 1.0, a new open-source software platform released today. Designed by a team that includes scientists at the University of Michigan, Cornell University and open-source software company Kitware Inc., Tomviz is the first open-source tool that enables researchers to easily create 3-D images from electron tomography data, then share and manipulate those images in a single platform...

Peering into Complex, Tiny Structures with 3D Analysis Tool Tomviz
New open source software tomviz—short for tomographic visualization—enables researchers to interactively understand large 3D datasets. More specifically, the software analyzes 3D tomographic data similar to a medical CT-scan but at the nanoscale. "When you can take a nanoparticle or biomolecule and spin it around, slice it, look inside it, and quantitatively analyze it, you get a complete picture from all angles," says Yi Jiang, a physics Ph.D. candidate at Cornell University. Watch this 3-minute video from the Michigan Engineering department....

The Future Of Open Access: Why Has Academia Not Embraced The Internet Revolution?
More than any other technology, the web has revolutionized access to the world’s information, putting everything from recipes to encyclopedias to books to news at the fingertips of anyone with an internet connection anywhere on the planet. The web’s role in democratizing access to global information has made it a poster child for the power of technology to advance society. Read More »

The Next Open Source Frontier Is the Farm
By scaling precision agriculture technologies to smaller sustainable agriculture systems, it should be possible to make many more crops and growing systems economically feasible without compromising environmental health and sustainabilty. This could mean more locally grown, organic food grown profitably in more communities and accessible to more people at lower cost—a huge win for small farmers. And it could mean that change is possible in large-scale farm management practices as well... Read More »

Unique Organic Molecule Discovered In Deep Space
A new kind of organic molecule has been discovered in a giant gas cloud in interstellar space, indicating that more complex molecules – the very core building blocks of life – can potentially form outside of the Earth and even be widespread in space...
