In August 2022 the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) launched the 2022 Public Health Data Systems Task Force as a subcommittee of the Health Information Technology Advisory Committee (HITAC). The task force will meet through the beginning of November to present recommendations continuing and building upon the work of the 2021 task force. Members of the task force include individuals from various levels of government, relevant public health associations, and industry partners. Specifically, the task force is focused on the certification criteria for EHR products certified under the ONC Health IT Certification Program that cover transmission of data from EHRs to public health in these domains...

Navigation Between Heavy-weight and Light-weight Standardization (Part 2)
Andy Oram | EMR & HIPPA | August 26, 2016
The previous section of this article laid out the context for HL7 FHIR standard and the Argonaut project; now we can look at the current status.Tripathi portrays the Argonaut process as radically different from HL7 norms. HL7 hasestablished its leading role in health standards by following the rules of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) in the US, and similar bodies set up in other countries where HL7 operates. These come from the pre-Internet era and emphasize ponderous, procedure-laden formalities. Meetings must be held, drafts circulated, comments explicitly reconciled, ballots taken. Historically this has ensured that large industries play fair and hear through all objections, but the process is slow and frustrates smaller actors who may have good ideas but lack the resources to participate.

Number of Public HIEs Drop, Bringing Viability into Question
Greg Slabodkin | Health Data Management | July 8, 2016
Despite federal funding that aided their creation, the number of community and state health information exchanges is declining as HIEs struggle to remain financially viable now that seed money has dried up. Those are among the results of a new national survey published in the July issue of Health Affairs that tracked community and state HIE efforts soon after federal funding ended. “We found 106 operational HIE efforts that, as a group, engaged more than one-third of all U.S. providers in 2014,” states the study’s authors...

Open Source Collaboration Key to Healthcare Blockchain Adoption
Elizabeth O'Dowd | HIT Infrastructure | August 24, 2017
Interest in healthcare blockchain continues to grow as organizations realize the potential data sharing advantages. Blockchain is not currently used in healthcare, but open source projects, such as Hyperledger, are working to develop blockchain standards that can eventually be used in healthcare. Entities are showing genuine interest in blockchain and are currently working on projects for future adoption, according to Hyperledger Executive Director Brian Behlendorf...

Precision Medicine: Analytics, Data Science and EHRs in the New Age
John Andrews | Healthcare IT News | August 15, 2016
The promise of genomics and personalized care are closer than many realize. But clinical systems and EHRs are not ready yet. While policymakers and innovators play catch-up, here’s a look at what you need to know. Considering how fast technology advances in the healthcare industry, it seems natural that a once-innovative concept could become obsolete in the span of, say, a dozen years. Knowledge, comprehension and capabilities continue moving forward, and if the instruments of support don't keep pace, it can cause a rift to appear. If nothing is done, it can exacerbate into a seismic event...

The Importance of High Quality Data for Artificial Intelligence Reliability
By Lindsay Westervelt | December 8, 2021
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a hot topic right now in medical practice. Though there are many reasons why AI solutions have become so popular, one of the biggest reasons is that AI has the potential to reduce clinical burnout and fatigue by improving Clinical Decision Support in electronic health record (EHR) systems. To understand how this can be achieved, we must first understand what AI is and how it works...For Healthcare, AI and Machine Learning algorithms must rely on copious amounts of granular, high-quality data.

VistA as an EHR System Core for DoD
By Roger A. Maduro | March 1, 2013
Here is a copy of the full text of the proposal submitted by the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to the Department of Defense in response to the Request for Information for an electronic health record (EHR) solution that can replace the existing DoD EHR system. This is the approach that makes the most sense as the current core EHR that the Department of Defense (DoD) uses is based on a 30-year-old version of VistA. The current EHR crisis facing DoD stems from the inability to upgrade this older version of VistA. What the VA is proposing is basically an upgrade to DoD's existing core EHR. Read More »
Welcome to 2016: HIMSS '16 Las Vegas, FHIR and More
Joshua Shreve | Dynamic Health IT | January 11, 2016
The New Year is a time for reflection. At the pace the health IT world is moving, reflections must be followed quickly by actions. As the calendar turned over, Dynamic Health IT took a moment to look back on a successful 2015. It was a year that included ambitious upgrades to our products, a wide range of fulfilling client work, a website refresh and some exciting new directions for our company (expanding our involvement in FHIR and PQRS, to name a few). But we don't like to rest on our laurels for long. So we're also looking ahead to just a few of the things 2016 holds in store...
