Healthy Skepticism – Jared Sinclair's Critique of HealthKit as Both an iOS Developer and Registered Nurse
Of the many new APIs announced at WWDC this summer, HealthKit has been particularly thought-provoking for me. At the risk of sounding like that guy, I think I have a somewhat priviledged perspective of HealthKit. There can’t be that many former registered nurses who’ve switched to iOS app development and tried to start a healthcare data company.

Hospital Nurses Forced To Develop Creative Workarounds To Deal With EHR System Flaws; Outdated Technologies And Lack Of Interoperability, Reveals Black Book
The most instrumental stakeholders of hospital EHR success are undeniably nurses, yet 98% of licensed RN’s agree that they have never been included in hospital technology decisions or design. 13,650 US nurses, a group rarely surveyed as the prime users of inpatient technologies, responded to Black Book’s Q3 2014 EHR Loyalty Poll addressing the difficulties of systems selected by non-clinicians and the impact on patient care...

Hospitals Remain Underinvested in Costing Technologies, Black Book ERP Survey Results
An inert healthcare enterprise resource planning software sector grew less than 2 percent in 2015 as hospitals turned available technology funding to conflicting priorities such as ICD 10 conversions, cybersecurity, population health and analytics, with less than 29 percent of all US hospitals having implemented any ERP product. As provider executives face compounding value-based risk decisions, recent interest in ERP has climbed sharply according to a recent Black Book survey of 1,158 health system procurement and technology leaders in the fourth quarter of 2016....

Image Sharing Grows in Importance
Despite the importance of developing an enterprise medical imaging approach, the strategy requires the easy exchange of images, and achieving that interoperability is a major challenge, according to results of a recent survey. Still, more than half of 100 surveyed IT leaders in healthcare organizations say their facility has an enterprise imaging strategy—a major component supporting the move to interoperability—and 54 percent say specialists at their facility can electronically exchange images with patients, providers and referring sites...

Open Source Electronic Health Records: A Cost Solution For Hospitals
When Oroville Hospital decided to digitize its patient medical records three years ago,...chief executive Robert Wentz...did something almost unheard of for a health care executive: he went open source. As the saying goes in this conservative industry, no one gets fired for picking Epic. Wentz’s decision is not for the squeamish or the straight-laced. It forced long-time hospital administrators with tight schedules and deadlines to loosen up and collaborate with a network of free agents—open source programmers who voluntarily support a publicly available electronic health record called VistA...
