AERA To Launch Open Access Research Journal
The American Educational Research Association (AERA) announced today that it will launch AERA Open, an online, peer-reviewed journal that will be freely available to all readers on the web. AERA Open is expected to start publishing articles in early 2014. “The launch of this innovative effort continues AERA’s leadership in exploring open access publishing,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine.

DIY Lab Technique to Revolutionise Training for Neuroscientists
A team of international researchers have come up with an inexpensive way to self-manufacture lab equipment, which could revolutionise the way neuroscientists across the world are trained. In a study published in the open access journal PLOS Biology, Dr Tom Baden from Sussex Neuroscience and André Maia Chagas, from the University of Tübingen, have devised a new imaging and microscope system called “FlyPi”. The equipment needed for modern neuroscience experiments can cost tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds, which often means only institutions in rich countries can undertake top-level research and scientific training...

Elsevier Announces the Launch of International Journal of Surgery Open
Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical, and medical information products and services, today announced the launch of the International Journal of Surgery Open (IJS Open), a new open access journal covering all areas of surgery. This peer-reviewed, online-only journal will make significant contributions to knowledge in clinical surgery, experimental surgery, and surgical education and history widely available to the global surgical community. Mainstream Academia Embraces Open Source Hardware
Twenty years ago, even staunch proponents of free and open source software like Richard Stallman questioned the social imperative for free hardware designs. Academics had barely started to consider the concept; the number of papers coming out annually on the topic were less than could be counted on someone's fingers. Not anymore! Not only has the ethical authority of Stallman embraced free hardware and free hardware design, but so has the academic community. Consider the graph below, which shows the number of articles on open source hardware indexed by Google Scholar each year from 2000 to 2017. In the last 17 years, the concept of open source hardware has erupted in ivory towers throughout the world. Now more than 1,000 articles are written on the topic every year.
