Emphasizing Open Development, Open Data, & Open Knowledge
Open knowledge and data will be the topic of the Open Knowledge Festival on 17-22 September. One of the topic streams of the event, jointly organised by Open Knowledge Foundation, the Finnish Institute in London and Aalto Media Factory, is openness and open data related to global development and financing. In the event, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs will launch a competition on visualising development cooperation statistics.

Open Source Software Now Permitted in the U.S. House of Representatives
The OpenGov Foundation, the Sunlight Foundation and the Congressional Data Coalition (CDC) today announced that Members, Committees, and staff within the U.S. House of Representatives are now able to use official resources to procure open source software, to fully participate in open source software communities, and to contribute software code developed with taxpayer dollars back to the public under an open source license. Opening Europe's Data
The European Public Sector Information (PSI) Directive was created in order to try to change this - to unlock Europe's data and to realise its value to society. Adopted in 2003, and implemented (at least in principle) by EU Member States in 2005, the Directive has the potential to become the basis for 'open by default' information policies across Europe. But has it opened Europe's data? Not exactly - at least not yet.

The Future of Scientific Discovery Relies on Open Science Models
Ross Mounce is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bath studying the use of fossils in phylogeny and phyloinformatics, completing his PhD at the University of Bath last year.
