Global Open Source Health IT Project Gets $1 Million Donation From Cryptocurrency Philanthropy

OpenMRS, Inc., an open source medical records platform used in developing countries, has received a $1 million donation from the Pineapple Fund, an $86 million cryptocurrency philanthropy created by an anonymous donor known only as “Pine.” Now in its 14th year, OpenMRS is being used in countries such as South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Uganda, Tanzania, Haiti, India, China, the United States, Pakistan, and many other places. Global OpenHIE Community to Hold 2019 Conference in Ethiopia

The OpenHIE community will hold its second annual community meeting November 4-8, 2019 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Between 200 and 300 individuals are expected to attend with the ultimate goal of development and efficient and effective operation of national and regional health information exchanges. OpenHIE, short for Open Health Information Exchange, is a global, mission-driven collective dedicated to improving the health of the underserved through open, collaborative development of implementation tools and to supporting country-driven, large-scale health information exchange. OpenMRS Holds World Wide Summit in Singapore

OpenMRS held its first annual World Wide Summit for interested participants and contributors (including developers and implementers) in Singapore from December 8-14, 2015. The World Wide Summit meeting is designed to create a collaborative global space to share and discuss work and ideas about OpenMRS, showcase innovative development that has occurred over the last year, and support an OpenMRS Hackathon. This first annual summit was planned to build, support and grow the OpenMRS community as well as the OpenMRS software suite. The conference was attended by over 100 participants from 6 continents. There were more than 50 sessions by close to 30 speakers.

Regenstrief to Highlight Open Source Projects for Health Information Exchange, Data Analysis at MedInfo 2015

Regenstrief Institute investigators experienced in the use of data to improve health care and its delivery in resource-constrained environments will introduce attendees at MedInfo 2015 to open source options for health information exchange and data analysis. Regenstrief investigator Shaun Grannis, M.D....and colleagues will present a workshop on OpenHIE, an international health information interoperability initiative supported by a growing community of governments, organizations, companies and individuals. Dr. Grannis, associate professor of family medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, is OpenHIE's chief architect, spearheading overall design.

Report on the Global OpenMRS Community Meeting in Malawi - Towards Evidence Based Health Service Delivery and Interoperability

One hundred seventy five members of the worldwide OpenMRS community–representing 20 countries–met in Malawi this past December for the 2017 OpenMRS Implementers’ Conference. This event was the second consecutive year a national government sponsored this global meetup, with Uganda hosting and sponsoring this meeting the previous year. The December conference was hosted by Malawi’s Ministry of Health and key-noted by ministry officials and leaders such Maganizo Monawe, Senior HIS Technical Advisor; and Anthony Muyepa, Director General at National Commission for Science and Technology.

Theresa Cullen to co-lead Regenstrief's transformational Global Health Informatics Program

She joins the institute's Center for Biomedical Informatics as an investigator following three-and-a-half years as chief medical informatics officer and director of health informatics at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Connecting California to Improve Patient Care is an annual conference on electronic health information exchange and interoperability.  Presenters will explain practical solutions for securely sharing electronic clinical information between separate health care facilities. Presentations address the status of health information exchange services in California, national standards for clinical data interoperability, innovations in patient safety, and emerging tools for physician and patient engagement.

California Connects Interoperability Exhibition, hosted concurrently as part of the Redwood MedNet Conference, will feature practical demonstrations on interoperability.  Ten kiosks will show the secure exchange of electronic health data, including patient engagement with the care team, in a hands on manner that allows one on one interaction with the kiosk presenters. The kiosks are co-sponsored by Redwood MedNet and California Association of Health Information Exchanges (CAHIE).

The OpenMRS Implementers meetings began in 2006 as a way to bring members of the community together during a dedicated amount of time to collaborate, share implementation experiences, and find ways to improve OpenMRS. These sessions coincide with the planned as well as the unconference sessions. The meeting will provide an opportunity for health care team members, informaticians, developers, implementers, and end users to collaborate and innovate. As a result, developers improve their technical skills in OpenMRS, implementers share best practices from implementations, users and health care team members propose and prioritize their top features for future releases of the software to ensure that their needs are met.
