CamelOne 2012: Enterprises are Turning to Open Source for Unprecedented Levels of Integration

Press Release | FuseSource | May 30, 2012

The consensus at the CamelOne 2012 conference, the only event for enterprise users of open source integration and messaging technologies, was that organizations will increasingly need to achieve Integration Everywhere as cloud computing, Big Data, and the demand for real-time access to information require applications, systems, devices and machines to work together in new ways. Attendance at this year's CamelOne, held May 15-16, 2012 in Boston, nearly doubled over last year and included presentations by experts from numerous organizations, including FuseSource customers the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), General Dynamics, Lynden International, the U.S. Department of Transportation's Volpe Center and the University of California, Berkeley.

"When FuseSource launched as an independent company in the fall of 2010 we knew that enterprises would ultimately require Integration Everywhere – the ability to achieve integration at the utmost edge of the enterprise where traditional technologies and licensing schemes exert a stranglehold on innovation and stifle efforts to create the real-time enterprise," said Larry Alston, president of FuseSource.  "Today, our customers – from three of the five largest retailers to innovative agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration – use our solutions to work smarter and faster. Our dramatic growth and the phenomenal response to CamelOne 2012 reflect the fact that integration prowess increasingly equates to business success."

FuseSource, the Integration Everywhere company, created the inaugural CamelOne event last year to provide software developers, architects and DevOps professionals with an opportunity to share enterprise success stories and best practices – all while providing organizations with a forum in which to explore the proven benefits of open source.  FuseSource also created the event with a keen focus on providing attendees with an opportunity to meet the experts behind popular Apache Software Foundation integration and messaging projects, including Apache ActiveMQ, Apache Camel, Apache CXF, and Apache ServiceMix. No company employs more founders of these projects, or committers to them, than FuseSource.

"CamelOne provides an opportunity to share ideas, enjoy the company of peers, and explore the endless possibilities open source and the Apache Software Foundation make possible," said FuseSource's CTO Rob Davies, who co-founded Apache ActiveMQ,  Apache Camel,  and Apache ServiceMix with James Strachan, software fellow at FuseSource.  "From CamelOne 2012 it's clear that organizations of all kinds increasingly realize that you can't address today's integration challenges without the inherent flexibility and the lightweight, modular nature of open source integration software. What's more, at this year's event we introduced products that compete directly with the most popular closed-source alternatives, offer greater flexibility and cost less."

Principle software engineers Jonathan Anstey and Claus Ibsen, committers to Apache Camel and co-authors of the book "Camel in Action," unveiled FuseSource's newest enterprise-class products and services at the opening general session at CamelOne.  These included the Fuse ESB® Enterprise 7.0 and Fuse™ MQ Enterprise 7.0 platforms that enable enterprises to embrace open source integration and messaging with refined products and services that directly address enterprises' most pressing needs for documentation, security, compliance, tooling, guarantees, convenience and more.

Attendees from numerous industries, including financial services, government, retail, telecommunications, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and other industries then attended their choice of more than 30 sessions over the two-day event, including end users' case studies and technical sessions. Some of the success stories shared by FuseSource customers included:

  • "Large-Scale Messaging with ActiveMQ for Particle Accelerators at CERN"
  • "General Dynamics Canada's Rapid Technology Integration Framework"
  • "Building a Reliable Messaging System for an Unreliable (and Diverse) World" – Lynden International
  • "Tracking Real-Time Weather, Big Data,  and Camel" – U.S. Department of Transportation's Volpe Center
  • "A Hundred Departments, Same Integration Solution" – the University of California, Berkeley

Some of the technical sessions, which presented attendees with an opportunity to focus on specific use cases, challenges, technologies and techniques, included:

  • "Cloud Development with Apache Camel and Amazon Web Services"
  • "What is Big Data Analytics and Hadoop and How Apache ActiveMQ Plays an Important Role"
  • "Open Source Cloud-based Enterprise Integration"
  • "Integration as a Service with Apache Camel"
  • "Large-Scale Deployments of Apache Camel in the Cloud"
  • "Using Fuse MQ and Fuse Fabric to Make Large ActiveMQ Deployments Easier"

"It wasn't too many years ago that only the most advanced IT organizations deployed our open source integration solutions," added Alston.  "CamelOne is but one strong indicator that the status quo is now very different: The world's most successful enterprises rely on FuseSource to deliver the performance, flexibility and cost savings they need.  With our latest product releases, mainstream enterprises can now do the same.  You don't need to be a Fortune 100 company or the world's most advanced enterprise to realize the proven benefits of enterprise-class open source integration and messaging.  Every enterprise can now be a real-time enterprise."

Videos of sessions given at CamelOne will be made available in the coming weeks.  For more information, visit www.camelone.com.
