Can Open Source EHRs Offer a New Path for Health IT Usability?
In an article published in JMIR Medical Informatics, researchers from the University of California-Davis decided to explore the small but intriguing world of open source EHRs, which may fit very neatly into the growing interest in application programming interfaces, FHIR, and other open data standards that encourage customized mix-and-match health IT development without the historical pitfalls of proprietary systems. Using data from 2014, the researchers identified 54 open source projects that met the HHS definition of an electronic health record. At the time, four of those packages had achieved Certified EHR Technology status from the ONC.

Class action lawsuit in Miami-Dade targets Allscripts
A lawsuit filed in Miami-Dade County Circuit Court seeks class action status for doctors who use the MyWay electronic health records (EHR) from Allscripts Healthcare Solutions. Panama City-based Pain Clinic of Northwest FL filed a purported class action lawsuit on Dec. 20 against Chicago-based Allscripts (NASDAQ: MDRX). In anticipation of House of Cards Season 4, and with all due respect to the show’s creators, I think real life is giving us a perfect plotline that includes politicians, corporate interests, their lobbyists and a big fat government contract. Maybe Francis and Claire have me seeing conspiracies everywhere, but it seems a chain of recent health IT events have created intrigue in what is historically our staid, conservative industry. Follow the timeline with me and decide for yourself if I’m hearing black helicopters.
