Google Proved That AI Can Reshape Medicine
A doctor’s work isn’t all done in examination rooms. Many specialists spend lots of time alone with the lights out, examining photographs that reveal their patients’ internal workings. That might soon change. A paper by Google published in the Journal of the American Medical Association details an algorithm that can detect when someone has developed blindness as a result of diabetes, trained and tested by board-certified ophthalmologists. It shows algorithms can, at least in the case of this particular affliction, make a diagnosis with an accuracy on-par with medical professionals...

Google Summer of Code 2012 Announced
OpenMRS, web-based medical record system originally designed for use in the developing world, has participated in GSoC for five years. In 2011, 15 students worked with OpenMRS mentors on a variety of tasks. Jelena Skorucak, for example, "reworked the attributes a person has within OpenMRS, giving clinics the flexibility to record more information about the persons."

Google Taking Over Health Records Raises Patient Privacy Fears
Last year, the U.K. government privacy watchdog said an NHS hospital had illegally sent 1.6 million patient records to DeepMind to develop Streams, fanning public fears about data safety. In June, a group of outside experts DeepMind Health appointed to scrutinize its work urged the unit to "entrench" its separation from Alphabet. After the consolidation with Google was announced, Julia Powles, a researcher at New York University School of Law and a critic of DeepMind's work with the NHS, scorched the reversal. "DeepMind said it'd never connect Streams with Google," she wrote. "The whole Streams app is now a Google product! That is an atrocious breach of trust."...
