Innovative healthcare software provider IMS MAXIMS and Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust are to share the story behind the successful deployment of the UK’s first open source electronic patient record (EPR) at eHealth major industry event, EHI Live. The trust’s director of information, Malcolm Senior, and the CEO of IMS MAXIMS, Shane Tickell, will address delegates in the digital health industry for the first time since the go-live of the system last month.

Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has picked IMS Maxims as preferred bidder to supply its electronic patient record system. The project could become the first implementation of an open source EPR in an acute NHS trust as IMS Maxims has committed to making its suite of products available on an open source basis.

HSCIC has just completed an ambitious 18 month transition project to entirely rebuild and redevelop the Spine on Open Source software and to move it to in-house management. This was achieved without disrupting the service it provides to 28,000 organisations and enabled the secure transfer of almost 150TB of data, including the demographic details of 80m people. The new Spine is believed to be the biggest public sector IT system to be built entirely on Open Source software, making it easier for developers to work with. It is managed from the Health and Social Care Information Centre's headquarters in Leeds.

UK's Code4Health Interoperability Site Launched at EHILive 2015

A Code4Health community focusing on interoperability has been launched today at the EHI Live 2015 conference in Birmingham. NHS England has unveiled a new web tool to encourage people to discuss and define a list of key application programming interfaces needed to enable new models of working across health and social care. Inderjit Singh, head of enterprise architecture at NHS England, told Digital Health News the Code4Health community “is about bringing together localities, suppliers and national organisations as a group of peers.”

UK's HSCIC Wraps Up NHS Open Source Spine Transition

Work on moving the NHS Spine to in-house management and redeveloping it to run on open source software has been completed, following an 18 month transition project run by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC). The organisation said it believes the Spine, which provides the technological backbone for connections between clinicians and service providers in NHS England, is now the largest public sector IT system to be built entirely on open source, and this will make it easier for developers to work with.

The agreement strengthens efforts to cultivate and increase the use of health IT tools and information designed to help improve the quality and efficiency of the delivery of health care in both countries.

US-UK sign healthcare IT MoU

NHS England and the Health and Social Care Information Centre will sign a healthcare IT memorandum of understanding with the US Department for Health and Social Services today. The MoU focuses on sharing common values around healthcare informatics and making it easier for small and medium-sized enterprises to get a foot in the door on both sides of the Atlantic.

Wye Valley NHS Trust to get open-source EPR

Wye Valley NHS Trust has signed a five-year contract with IMS Maxims for its open-source electronic patient record (EPR) system. It is the second UK health trust to choose the openMAXIMS platform after Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust signed up for the system last year. Wye Valley aims to go live with the system by the end of 2016, when the contract for the trust’s iPM patient administration system, which it received as part of the National Programme for IT, expires.

Code4Health and Interoperability, In partnership with NHS England
Building on the success of Code4Health* , NHS England is launching the Code4Health Interoperability Community with a specific remit of co-creating a common and open set of APIs to support information sharing across health and care. Governed by a community nominated project board, made up of representatives from the supplier community, local providers as well as reps from ‘the Centre’, together the group will develop and host of a prioritised catalogue of APIs for use across health and social care.
